Torsional Resonance (TR)

During Torsional Resonance (TR) Mode, the afm tip is actuated parallel (as opposed to vertical) with respect to the surface. To track the surface at a constant distance, forces between the afm probe and sample cause a beneficial change in resonance behavior. The main benefit in TR Mode is that the tip remains at a constant distance to the surface at all times. This is especially helpful in modes like TR-TUNA or nearfield-optical experiments.
